5 weeks until…

Ziva Turns 1!

10 months and 3 weeks done. Just like that, she’s almost 1. How did it go this fast?! While I’ve been busy working on my squats and side lunges, this little peach has been working on her walking skills. Any day now and she’ll be walking up and asking for what she wants LIKE A REAL BIG KID! Mind. Blown.

So, with that said I’ll share that the birthday planning has commenced! I always loved picking a theme for my birthdays as a child and I’ll admit this is something I’ve looked forward to doing with my own child for a long time. Of course, she doesn’t have much to say about things just yet… But that hasn’t stopped me!

I’d been debating between a rainbow  theme and a strawberry theme. I love what the rainbow represents (she is after all, our rainbow baby), and she brings us so much joy that the bright colors felt appropriate. But when it comes to Ziva’s sometimes blonde, sometimes strawberry-reddish hair and her berry-sweet cuteness (don’t let the saccharine sentiment gag you), I ultimately decided a “Berry 1st Birthday” is the one for her.
So, after scouring Etsy, Pinterest, Amazon, and Oriental Trading Company, we have a theme!

Looking Ahead 2016

First, Looking back

2015. Wow, what a year. It’s probably obvious what made my year. Becoming Ziva Pearl’s mother is the most amazing, fulfilling, joy inducing experience I could have ever imagined. Seriously. Don’t hate me for saying it, but I’m in love with this mommy gig. We have had our rough patches, but nothing a little mama-snuggling and troubleshooting couldn’t fix (thank you nipple shield). She brings me so much joy and is such a happy baby. I feel lucky I get to be her mom.

2016 is going to have to work extra hard to top this year! That’s okay though cause I have big plans. ūüėČ

img_0185
2015 was all about our journey as new parents, and my guess is every year of parenthood is a new learning process with curve balls and triumphs, so why should we expect anything less in 2016?!

Looking Inward

In the hustle and bustle of parenthood, I want to make 2016 a year for retrofitting and reinforcing the walls that make up my personal foundation. My goal is to rebuild my sense of self now that I’m a mom. It’s funny how much my perspective, style, and focus has shifted in such a short time! I don’t want to be that mom hiding from the camera and absent from the family album. I want to be a confident, healthy, and active role model for Ziva as she gets older and I’m willing to do the work to make that happen.

Looking ahead together

As a family, 2016 is going to be another year of big change… Nope! We aren’t pregnant with #2. We are, however, preparing to make the big move to my home state of CALIFORNIA! The details are still in the works, but by summer of 2016 the little Lubetsky family of Ann Arbor will be heading west!

Happy Hanukkah 2015!

Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!

Happy Hanukkah!

We are having a family Hanukkah party tonight with my in-laws and I can’t wait for all of the firsts with baby Ziva and our nephew Asher (also born this year). I’ve gone a little crazy with the presents and am only now realizing that half of them say 3+ on the labels… Ziva will just have a head start I guess. Don’t worry, they don’t have small parts.
This morning I realized I should plan for a bit of a cheat meal tonight. Hanukkah is about the Jewish people’s triumph over oppressors and the miracle of oil lasting for 8 days when it was only enough to light the menorah in the temple for 1. Because of this symbolism, on Hanukkah we light candles for 8 nights and eat foods fried in oil. Delicious foods like potato latkes (fried potato pancakes) and jelly donuts ūüć©… Yum!
With that in mind I was skeptical about finding a way to make traditional Hanukkah foods a little more health-friendly… If it’s not fried, how is it related to Hanukkah?! Well, if you are looking for something Hanukkah and goal friendly, try these baked Sweet Potato Latkes from the Beachbody Blog. I bet I could easily swap out some gluten-free ingredients to make them Sarah-friendly too.¬†They may not be fried, or even gluten free but they sure look good!

My your Hanukkah be filled with light, love, and abundant joy.

The “Right Time”

Do Something

Once when I was complaining about my weight and my body to a friend back in my early 20’s that friend said something that struck a chord in me. She responded “If you really wanted to do something about it you would. It’s not impossible.” She meant it as a “shut up or do something” statement I’m sure. How annoying would it be to listen to a friend always make self-deprecating comments about their body?

At first I was hurt “She doesn’t understand it’s not as easy for me!” And, “but I do really want to do something about it…” But then it really got me thinking. For a smart girl I feel really silly that it had never really occurred to me that I could LEARN how to get fit. I only knew vaguely about calories and really knew nothing about how much fat, calories, etc. were appropriate for my body and activity level. I grew up in a healthy foods type of home. We didn’t eat a ton of sugary processed foods. I got Eden soy milk boxes in my lunches and we had vegetables and whole grains in abundance, but I didn’t learn about healthy portions or nutritional balance.

I had always felt like an active, athletic person stuck in the wrong body. Like something went wrong along the way and I wasn’t supposed to be so out of shape. So, the idea that I could do something about how my body felt was inspiring, though incredibly obvious looking back now. It wasn’t about blaming me for how I got to where I was, it was about empowering me to feel a sense of control over my situation. I really could do something about it, it might not be easy, but it is/was possible. It’s taken a number of years, stops and starts to finally get a handle on the “how,” but knowing I can has helped me stay on the journey.

Making now¬†the “Right time”

I’ve had a number of friends contact me who are interested in the Beachbody programs. Some are totally ready to go and jump right in with the 21 day fix, but there are many who decide they aren’t ready or “it isn’t a good time right now.” That’s legitimate. You really do have to be ready to do the work for these programs, or any programs to really be effective. But, I also have to ask “When will it be a good time? Can you define what will be different in the future that would make that the right time, rather than now? Perhaps the reason right now isn’t a good time is still going to be an issue a month from now, or¬†a year.”

Waiting for the right time may end up an endless cycle of wishing you’d already started. I watched a Beachbody coach on social media for over a year before I jumped in, and you know what? I wish I hadn’t waited. I have LESS time now than I did when I first found the programs. I am MORE exhausted than I was before I had Ziva. If I was using my old system of judgment, now wouldn’t look at all like the “right time”. The thing is, I decided to make it the right time. I decided this journey is my priority right now, along with my job and family responsibilities.

Caring for myself and working towards my goals doesn‚Äôt need a magical start date in some elusive future when life is easier. It needs to start now, so that I feel good, have energy and stamina for all that life throws my way. Now is the right time, because I’m making it so.

So, perhaps right now really is too hectic and stress filled to dive in to a lifestyle program like the 21 day fix. Or, maybe it’s the perfect time. Exercise helps to relieve stress, it releases endorphins that can boost your mood and leave you feeling more energized.

If you really want to see change happen in your life starting NOW;

If you can carve 30 minutes a day out of your schedule (maybe drop a TV show, or shave 15 minutes off of a few other activities each day);

If you can commit to being thoughtful about your eating habits and spending as little as 3 hours a week pre-prepping your meals (not mandatory, but super helpful- especially later when you can grab prepared meals all week and gain back extra time in the evenings. Perfect for leaving extra time to workout!);

If you want to stop lamenting the state you’re in and start taking action;

Than now is the perfect time to start.

How can you get started?

October gouls…I mean goals

Hardy har har. You see what I did there with the title? #HalloweenJokes #IllBeHereAllMonth

At the prompting of my team, Gobal Impact, I’ve been working on pinning down SMART goals each month. So, new month, new or renewed goals it is!

SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. As the beautiful sayings posted all over inspirational Instagram and Pinterest boards always say, a goal without a plan is just a wish! SMART goals are goals built with a plan in mind.

My goals for this month are as follows:

  1. Focus on Personal Development. At least 15 minutes a day, everyday. I’ve gotten started on this by listening to the book The Compound Effect.
  2. Reach Success Club by helping at least three people get started on a fitness program, and on their way to better health and fitness by the end of the month.
  3. Press Play Everyday. That means no matter what, even if it’s just 10 minute abs, I’ll press play and do a workout each and every day this month. I know I’ll feel better for it.

Other goals I’ve got rheuminating right now, but haven’t made a clear plan for yet are getting to sleep earlier, being more efficient in my time management, and teaching Ziva to clap! Baby party tricks are the best.

What are your October goals?

I love my body

What does it mean to me to love my body?

Can I be a curvy “thick” girl who loves her body and also loves fitness? HELL YES.

I got involved with Beachbody as a coach because I believe there is a healthy, body-positive way you can approach fitness, and yes, also weight loss. I’m not in this because I believe only one body type is beautiful. I’m in this because I believe that no matter what your body type is, if you want to be fit, active, and strong, you should be able to find a healthy and positive routine that works for you.

Though I’ve fluctuated in my activity level over the years, I’m always drawn back to living an active life. By being a Beachbody coach and customer, I’m able to do that on my own terms, on my own schedule, with the support of many other people who are also on their own journey.

Loving your body and wanting to get fit or lose weight don’t have to be contradicting ideas. They can go hand in hand.

I love my body and what it can do. I love what it feels like when I feel my core muscles respond to my movements and support my ability to comfortably and confidently move. I love the way my body feels after a good workout. The way my shoulders are straighter and I sit a little taller. I love the way I’m able to bound up and down stairs with more ease when I’m a little lighter on my feet. I believe I deserve to look and feel good in my own eyes, and so I work out. Because that’s what feels good to me.

The name of the company is Beachbody, which implies that there are beach ready bodies and there are others that aren’t. I believe that taking your body to the beach is what makes it a beach body, and nothing else. I want to support that idea as I also support peoples fitness goals.

People (including myself) also have aesthetic reasons they look to fitness and weight loss. But losing weight just to lose weight isn’t sustainable. I’ve done that before and I just ended up gaining it all back once the goal was attained. When it comes to getting fit, instead of just getting skinny, it’s not a single numerical goal, it’s an ongoing state of action that is about more than just your weight.

I don’t want to support the idea that there is only one definition of beautiful, I want to be a positive force for people who want to gain strength and physical abilities, feel good, and look good, no matter their size. I want to support and encourage people to eat healthy, whole foods and to nourish their bodies like they love themselves.

If you are interested in working with me to reach your fitness goals, send me a message and I’ll be in touch!

My Vegetable Habit

It’s actually incredible how quickly my body has adjusted to getting the proper servings of vegetables each day. Whereas before I would start itching for a high carb, high sugar treat in the late afternoon energy lull, I now long for something crunchy and green. Not to say I wouldn’t go for a good pumpkin spice muffin if you’re offering… But seriously, my body has started to crave the real¬†good stuff.

What also might surprise you is that both my husband and I are getting VERY full from our veg-heavy meals. It’s amazing what balanced nutrition can do! Now that we’re in the habit, it seems natural to have vegetables as the majority in most meals.

The only trouble? Keeping enough veggies in the house!

Labor Day Weekend 2015

We were in need of some time at home to work on projects and spend quality time with each other. Thank goodness for the long weekend! On Saturday we did a ton of normal errands, living room workout, and brought in big haul of greens for the 5 day clean eating challenge we’re kicking off this Tuesday.

Grocery haul

There’s still time to sign up if you are interested, by the way.

On Sunday a few of my friends came over to practice for their budding personal organization business. I’m so grateful to them for offering to practice on my closet because it was in dire straits. I’ve been maintaining multiple size wardrobes for a while and it has resulted in an overflowing closet and dressers. I made them an egg bake for brunch and they spent like 4 hours helping me cut through the clutter and clean out the excess.

They pulled out every piece of clothes I owned. Only a portion was allowed back in the closet.
They pulled out every piece of clothes I owned. Only a portion was allowed back in the closet.
The results? 6 bags of clothing on its way out the door! They even took it with them so I wouldn’t have a chance to pick back through it later. I’m telling you, if you ever have a chance to work with professional organizers it is so worth it! If you’d like a recommendation, shoot me a message and I’ll put you in touch. I just hope they want more practice soon because the nursery needs their help!

Sunday night we headed out to the in-laws for a get together with out of town family. Our new little nephew and Ziva had a great time practicing tummy time together. Ziva is really getting to the age where she notices and wants to interact with other babies. It’s pretty cute! Cousins

Today we were ready to get some exercise to burn off some of the treats from the night before. There are so many adorable neighborhoods here in Ann Arbor and we love going for walks to oogle the cute little houses and quaint family neighborhoods. Today we drove over to the old west side and took Brinkley and Ziva for a nice long walk. It’s pretty hot out, but there was a nice breeze.

IMG_5824

Ziva slept through most of the walk, but Brinkley was loving it! She loves taking walks in new places and she stops to mark EVERYWHERE. You’d think she was a boy dog.

At the end of our walk we stopped in at Argus Farm Stop for some coffee and water. I love the farm stop for their delicious drinks and fresh local produce. It’s a bonus that it’s also completely adorable.

We’ve been trying to get out and active each weekend since we know the nice days are numbered with the fall closing in on us. Our holiday weekends may not look quite like they used to, but they’re wonderful all the same. As for tonight? Meal prep and the 21 Day Fix Dirty 30 workout for me.

Hope you all enjoyed your labor day holiday!

Prepped for success

MealPrepMondays

#mealprepmonday #mealprepsunday

Search them on Instagram, I promise you, it’s a thing. It’s a thing for a good reason, too! Planning and preparing meals in advance is a great way¬†to stay ahead in healthy eating.

This week it was my birthday. I didn’t feel like making a giant salad and portions of protein on Sunday. I took the day off for other things. Well, whaddaya think happened? Monday I went¬†out for lunch, not ideal, but delicious. Then Tuesday rolls around and there was¬†no time for lunch packing or breakfast making. I grabbed whatever was easy to transport or fast to throw together (my shipment of Shakeology needs to get here already). I sat down to eat lunch and immediately regretted skipping prep day. Hardly any veggies, not enough of anything, dense calories but not really satisfying…

When I fail to prep, I’m left with a raggletaggle bundle of random things. There’s most often no semblance of balance to my meals this way. I’m left hungry for that something that was missing (most often either the proteins or veggies), and I’m more susceptible to temptations and “easy” snacks.

Needless to say, I wasn’t about to let the same thing happen again on Wednesday! ¬†

Since I started the 21 day fix it’s been really interesting to see where the holes are in my eating habits. It’s obvious now I was definitely eating WAY TOO FEW veggies. That’s right. ¬†Not too many, too few. In this meal plan sometimes the issue is you need to eat more, not less. I would fill up on nuts and cereals, calorie dense foods but I’d still be missing something, and it was definitely veggies. By prepping my week day meals I’m able to make sure I have enough veggie snacks, protein, and veggie-full lunches to keep me going strong.
I’d love to hear new ideas for balanced lunches. Post your pics on my Facebook page or tag me on Instagram @Sarah_Ivy! Are you looking for a meal plan to follow? Drop your email below or send me a message here. I’ll help you find the best program¬†for your goals.

Happy preppin’ y’all!
